Good Friday – Easter Customs at Church
April 14, 2023 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm
On Sunday, Orthodox believers will celebrate the greatest Christian holiday, Easter and the Resurrection of Christ. Unlike Orthodox Christians, Catholics celebrated Easter last Sunday, given that we follow different calendars (Gregorian and Julian calendars).
All Christians generally follow similar customs on the occasion of the celebration of the greatest Christian holiday. The days before Easter are filled with repentance, forgiveness, fasting and prayer.
Friday is a day for spiritual purification. Jesus Christ was crucified on this day and therefore it is considered the most difficult holiday of the year. On Good Friday one does not work and sympathizes with the Son of God. Many practice a strict fast, during which they do not eat anything until sunset and drink only water.
In Orthodox churches, a specially decorated table is placed on Good Friday, which is a symbol of the tomb of Jesus. On it, the Shroud is brought out – a cover on which the face of Jesus Christ is presented lying in the grave. Orthodox believers go to church with flowers and a red egg, which they leave on the “grave”, kiss the Shroud, and then bend down and pass under the table, praying for health, peace and well-being. Passing under the Shroud symbolizes the death and resurrection of Christ. It is believed that the one who passes under it enters as a sinner and leaves as a new person, cleansed of old sins.
To experience these customs, join us today at 17:00 in front of the Saint Nicholas Church (main church).
