Lesnovo Monastery and Caves

This region’s little hidden gem, the Lesnovo village and its monastery are rich in history, nature, culture and interesting stories.
It is the best-preserved fossil extinct volcanic crater not only in our country but also on the Balkan Peninsula. The village is one of the oldest in our country and it lies exactly in the central part of the crater. Today only about 40 people live there.
The monastery itself plays a very important role in Macedonian history. Built during the second half of the 11th century, it is crucial because here lived 4 of the most important monks in our country responsible for the spread of literacy among the people. The monastery served as a literary school called Scriptorium. At the time, more than 200 monks served here. Many people claim the place has holy healing powers so it is regularly visited by believers.
We’ll visit the local caves where the local population has been making millstones for centuries. Today the caves are only a tourist attraction. We’ll also visit the Holly Virgin Cave Church to which a very interesting legend is told for generations.
